The Obstetrics and Reproductive Medicine Department cares for pregnant women, prioritising the health of the mother and the future baby above all else, while always respecting the wishes of the mother such as her preference for a natural birth or a C-section.
For women who want to have children and require technical assistance, we also have a cutting edge assisted reproduction laboratory. We also store the frozen eggs of women who have been diagnosed with cancer; provide treatment and support to women who have suffered consecutive miscarriages; and offer gynaecological treatment to girls, teenagers and women who are entering the menopause or who have a health problem.
The Obstetrics and Reproductive Medicine Department is a leading centre for prenatal diagnostics and intrauterine surgery.
The Obstetrics and Reproductive Medicine Department offers world-leading treatment, teaching and research.
The Reproductive Medicine Unit has the required technology and infrastructure in order to treat all issues related to human reproduction.
The Obstetrics Unit cares for women before, during and after their pregnancy. Its absolute priority is to meet the needs of each woman at all times. In a moment as important as the birth, the unit listens to the mother and provides her with everything she needs in order to take the decisions that she feels are correct.
Delayed cord clamping, which entails letting the newborn's umbilical cord continue beating after birth, is promoted to reduce the chance of the baby suffering from anaemia during its first year of life. We also promote skin-to-skin contact, also known as the kangaroo method, in which the newborn is placed in direct contact with the mother’s skin.
Services offered by the unit:
The Department prides itself on its ability to provide foetal treatments in serious cases in which the future baby requires surgery during the pregnancy. Vall d’Hebron Hospital is the leading centre for very high risk pregnancies, and it also has vast experience in the ultrasound monitoring of high and low risk pregnancies.
In addition, pregnant mothers with serious illnesses can give birth with the peace of mind of being in a hospital with all the necessary specialities in case any complications arise.
For all these reasons, our Department is considered a tertiary level, highly qualified centre.
We treat a high number of very high risk patients from all over Catalonia, the rest of Spain as well as from other countries.
We are also one of the hospitals accredited by the European Board and College of Obstetrics and Gynaecology (the only one in Spain), for the quality of our care, teaching and research.

The Paediatrics Department at the Vall d'Hebron University Hospital integrates several sections and units of specific paediatric areas.
We provide assistance from birth to adolescence. As an integrated center at the Vall de Hebrón University Hospital, we facilitate the transfer of child patients to adults within the same hospital.
Vall de Hebrón Children's Hospital is one of the centers with the most capacity to solve complex pediatric processes in Catalonia and Spain.
The Vall d'Hebron University Hospital's Paediatric Department includes various sections and units from specific paediatric areas (paediatric subspecialities):
The Paediatric Department staff includes 52 specialist paediatric doctors to help provide the care, teaching and research the department is responsible for. It also has the necessary nursing and administrative staff, as well as assistants who help with our research and social work and much else. The 60 paediatric residents in their specific areas receive training and take part in care during their time in the various units within the department.
We provide care for all types of paediatric patients, from infants to adolescents, with acute and chronic paediatric diseases corresponding to the areas mentioned above. You can find more information about each specific section and unit on their respective web pages.
There are 60 paediatrics residents at Vall d’Hebron University Hospital, totalling 15 per year. In recent years, Vall d'Hebron Paediatrics has consolidated its position as the number 1 destination for new resident doctors, and obtained the best results of all hospitals in Spain in the 2017 medical exams.
The Paediatric Department is responsible for significant teaching activity as part of the Autonomous University of Barcelona medical degree, with a paediatrician professor, three professors certified by the Spanish National Agency for the Evaluation of Quality and Accreditation (ANECA) and a professor accredited for advanced research by the Agency for the Quality of the University System of Catalonia (AQU), together with six associate medical professors.
The Paediatric Department also teaches Masters courses in paediatric subspecialities: Paediatric endocrinology, infectious and immunodeficiency diseases, paediatric neurology and paediatric pneumology and allergology.
The Paediatric Department's research is among the most important on the Vall d’Hebron campus, with specific lines that are listed in the individual descriptions of the Sections and Units concerned.
At the Foetal Medicine Unit of Vall d'Hebron University Hospital, we offer highly specialised care for the treatment of various diseases, for both high-risk mothers and foetuses. Our extensive experience makes us a reference centre in Catalonia, Spain and neighbouring countries. Since 2015, we are the only centre in Spain that is able to offer all intrauterine surgery possibilities.
At our Unit, we use the most advanced technology, so we can offer highly sophisticated examinations and treatments both for the foetus, which becomes a patient before birth, and the mother, who presents very high risk problems, for herself and for the foetus or baby.
Quality, personalised care during gestation requires different highly specialised units that help in possible complications of the mother and the foetus. For mothers, we have an Intensive Care Medicine and Intermediate Obstetric Care Department; for babies, we offer families the most advanced procedures and technology in diagnosis, management and intrauterine neonatal treatments.
Some of the diseases we deal with are:
The Department set up the Maternal and Foetal Medicine Research Group, recognised by both Catalan and Spanish research agencies, which works at the Vall d'Hebron Research Institute and promotes basic and applied research, and the host laboratories at Vall d'Hebron.
The Maternal and Foetal Medicine Research Group is part of the Division of Obstetrics, Paediatrics and Genetics, and is made up of a network of interdisciplinary researchers in basic and clinical sciences with a shared focus of interest.
Our state-level centre enjoys European recognition for the training of EBCOG residents EBCOG (European Board and College of Obstetrics and Gynaecology) and the EAPM (European Association of Perinatal Medicine). We are also the first centre accredited for the training of Fellows2 in gynaecological oncology and breast pathologies by the ESGO (European Society of Gynaecological Oncology).
The main purpose of the Gynaecology Department is to offer constant, up-to-date expert service to all women in our area of influence. On the other hand, as are a level three hospital, we are leaders in high-level techniques and technologies.
Our Department is one of the finest in the country, especially for oncology, for cancer of the breast and lower female genitalia. These are complex pathologies whose treatment must take a multidisciplinary approach. Thanks to the support we receive from multiple specialists, we are proud to offer a high-quality service.
Coordinating with primary care services and providing comprehensive care from the very first point of contact are both essential aspects of the service. This is necessary for women of all ages, from paediatric gynaecology, paediatric endocrinology, gynaecological pathologies, pre-invasive lesions, which can be precursors to cancer, and malignant tumours in both the genitalia and the breast, menopause and post-menopausal pathologies.
Our overall objective is to provide care for patients in our area of influence, including gynaecological care, as well as training and healthcare prevention measures and, at the same time, we aim to become a Centre of Excellence for certain pathologies, such as high-complexity surgeries.
The specific objectives of the healthcare division are, firstly, to provide medical care as urgently as possible in presumably benign pathologies. For all patients with either presumptive or confirmed diagnosis of neoplasia (abnormal formation of a new tissue, benign or malignant tumour), both gynaecological and mammary, immediate care must be provided. Finally, we must review and produce protocols and clinical guides for all the most common pathologies.
In all cases, we aim to carry out surgical treatment of gynaecological and mammary neoplasms when indicated with as short a waiting time as possible between diagnosis, histology and surgery.
The Paediatrics Teaching Unit has extensive experience in training specialists. There are a total of 60 Paediatrics residents at Vall d’Hebron University Hospital, 15 per year. In addition to this, we receive residents from hospitals all over the world.
Pediatric training itineraries
Over the last few years, paediatrics at Vall d’Hebron has been residents’ first choice, and in the 2017 exam session achieved the best results of any Spanish hospital.
The Department has a Paediatrics Teaching Subcommittee, comprising twelve tutors and twenty residents overseeing the practical application of the training and its integration into healthcare activities. Thanks to the involvement of these professionals, we can ensure supervised completion of the training programme objectives.
This Teaching Unit comprises different healthcare departments and units, including the Paediatrics, Nephrology, Neonatology, Paediatric Oncology and Haematology, Intensive Care, Neurology, Endocrinology, Infectious Diseases, Allergies, Cardiology, Respiratory Medicine, Gastroenterology, and A&E Departments.
It is vital for residents to train in research methodology as this is necessary to take part in and develop research projects. From the second year onwards, we invite residents to carry out research work, and a minimum number of papers and publications is required in addition to their full cooperation in sessions within the Department.
Why specialise at Vall d’Hebron?
Residents in Obstetrics and Gynaecology undergo ongoing and tutored learning throughout their training, enabling them to acquire in-depth knowledge of the physiology and pathology of the lower female genitalia, pregnancy and birth.
Obstetrics and gynecology training itinerary
The Obstetrics and Gynaecology Teaching Unit trains residents in the physiological and pathological aspects of human reproduction, and also pregnancy, birth and post-partum care, and their disorders. It also deals with the organs that make up the female genital tract and breast care. Related preventative, psychic, and social aspects are also within its scope.
