Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) is a chronic inflammatory condition affecting the gastrointestinal tract (GIT). The pathophysiology of IBD is multifaceted, driven by a complex interplay of genetic, environmental, and immune factors, and is featured by high variability among patients. This complexity makes the disease unpredictable and the treatment particularly challenging. Current therapies often lack precision, failing to target the inflamed areas directly, which results in reduced effectiveness and significant side effects.
Stimulus-responsive nanoparticles (NPs) can deliver therapeutics directly to inflamed sites, boosting efficacy and minimizing exposure to the rest of the body. This approach improves treatment outcomes and reduces side effects, offering a major advancement in IBD management. Among these, ROS-sensitive nanosystems are the most effective, as elevated ROS levels are a common feature in inflamed tissues of IBD patients despite individual variations.
