Research projects on biomedicine and biotechnol have been dramatically boosted with the advent of genome editing tools, particularly the CRISPR-Cas9 system, imported from prokaryotes, where it functions as an adaptive immune defense system againsts viruses and intruding DNA molecules. In about 6 years the CRISPR-Cas9 system was shown to work in mammalian cells and, from there, to a variety of organisms and applications, including the efficent target modification of genomes at will.
