La llet humana conté una microbiota pròpia, que es transfereix al lactant i que juga un paper rellevant en l'adquisició de la microbiota infantil. Diversos factors poden provocar una disbiosi de la microbiota mamària i conduir a una mastitis. La rellevància mèdica de les mastitis sol ser infravalorada; no obstant això, s'haurien de considerar un problema rellevant per a la salut pública atès que constitueixen la primera cuasa mèdica de deslletament precoç, impedint que la parella mare-fill rebi els beneficis de la lactància. Les mastitis es poden classificar en diversos grups segons la seva etiopatogènia, generalment força desconeguda excepte en els casos de mastitis agudes. La formació de biopel·lícules per part dels agents etiològics i la seva creixent resistència als antibiòtics ha provocat un augment en el nombre de casos amb un fracàs terapèutic o recurrents. En aquestes situacions, la modulació de la microbiota mamària podria ser una alternativa.
