El Servei de Cirurgia Pediàtrica del Vall d'Hebron Barcelona Hospital Campus organitza els dies 19 i 20 d’octubre el I Simposi Internacional sobre Deformitats de la Caixa Toràcica. La direcció del curs recau en el Dr. Manuel López Paredes, Cap de Cirurgia Pediàtrica, i Ana Laín Fernández, cirurgiana pediàtrica, ambdós de l’Hospital MaternoInfantil Vall d’Hebron. El curs compta amb el suport organitzatiu de l’Aula Vall d’Hebron.
Aquest simposi reuneix els principals experts internacionals en el camp de la cirurgia pediàtrica del pectus excavatum, que han dut a terme cirurgies en directe. El primer dia ha estat dedicat al tractament del pectus excavatum (deformitat congènita de la caixa toràcica caracteritzada per pit enfonsat a la regió de l’estern), mentre que el segon dia està dedicat al tractament del pectus carinatum (la caixa toràcica sobresurt). Vicenç Martínez Ibáñez, gerent de l'Hospital Universitari Vall d'Hebron, ha participat en l’acte inaugural.
El simposi compta amb la presència de Donald Nuss, dels Estats Units, creador de la tècnica mínimament invasiva per al tractament del pectus excavatum; Hyung Joo Park, de Corea del Sud; Marcelo Martínez Ferro, de l’Argentina; Mustafa Yuksel, de Turquia, o Robert Kelly, dels Estats Units. El Dr. Nuss és un eminent cirurgià que va descriure l’any 1997 la tècnica mínimament invasiva per al tractament del pectus excavatum. Aquesta tècnica va permetre canviar el paradigma en la patologia del pectus excavatum, ja que demostrava que la caixa toràcica és una estructura elàstica i mal·leable en els nens i els adolescents.
