Smoke-Free Campus

The Vall d’Hebron Barcelona Hospital Campus aims to become a smoke-free healthcare campus, with initiatives focused on preventing and controlling smoking and promoting healthy environments and activities.

Project description

We have been committed to the Catalonia Smoke-Free Hospitals Network since 2002. As a promoter of health, there is an active policy that aims to ensure a smoke-free environment for users and professionals at the centre.

The Campus' robust commitment to health is recognised by its ‘gold level’ accreditation from the Global Network for Tobacco-Free Healthcare Services. This accreditation is awarded to healthcare facilities that implement the highest standards of action to create a smoke-free environment in line with global quality criteria.

Commitment

The regulation on smoke-free spaces is based on Law 42/2010 of 30 December, modifying Law 28/2005 of 26 December, on healthcare measures relating to smoking and the regulation of the sale, supply, consumption and advertising of tobacco products.

In compliance with the smoke-free policy, and as part of the Quality Plan, the Campus has established the Smoke-Free Hospital Committee. Its mission is to ensure compliance with smoke-free regulations throughout the healthcare facility and to promote actions that support health promotion and disease prevention.

Aims
  • To comply with current legislation on healthcare measures to combat smoking.
  • To implement actions promoted by the Catalan and European Smoke-Free Hospitals networks.
  • To implement actions for training, communication and information, to encourage co-responsibility.
  • To promote healthy workplaces that ensure the health of all professionals.
  • To obtain the commitment of providers and sub-contracted businesses to apply and comply with Law 42/2010 of 30 December, 2010.
  • To prohibit the sale, distribution and advertising of tobacco products within the hospital grounds.
  • To periodically assess the advances made at the centre.
  • To implement improvement actions to drive the project forward.
Activities

The Smoke-Free Campus activities include:

  • The Smoking Cessation Consultation Service (Preventive Medicine Service) and the Tobacco Addiction Unit (Psychiatry Service) for inpatients, outpatients, their families and hospital staff.
  • The celebration of Smoke-Free Week and World No Tobacco Day (around 31 May).
  • Proactive awareness campaigns to prevent tobacco use on campus.
  • Training staff to advise and support patients who wish to quit smoking.
  • Conducting surveys on smoking habits and taking environmental tobacco smoke measurements in buildings and outdoor areas.
